Skateboarding is a cool sport that many kids might be interested in. If you have a child who likes skateboarding, and you are thinking of buying them one as a gift, you are in the right place.
There are many skateboards in the market, but not all of them stand out. The best skateboards are built with impeccable style and standards. When choosing a skateboard for your kid, don’t fall for good looks and end up making the wrong decision.
Some may argue with this, but we believe the best age for children to start learning how to skate is 6 years old. Younger children have a problem balancing on a full-sized board, which is the best type of skateboard for young beginners. We recommend a skateboard with a 7.5″ to 8″ width length for kids who are 6 years and above because they offer more room when the child is pushing the skateboard. Anything bigger can throw the kid off balance unless they have larger feet than usual. Anything under will be a kid-sized board and your child does not need that unless they are younger than 6 years.
We also recommend that parents go for complete skateboards for children. This will save you the time and energy it will take to gather all the parts for a skateboard and set it up yourself. A complete, pre-assembled skateboard is not only convenient, but it is also cheaper than buying different parts from different shops. It will also save you the trouble of mistakenly buying skateboard parts that don’t fit when assembling.
Your selection should be made with caution because a bad skateboard can cause serious injuries to your child when they use it. We have compared some of the best skateboards for 6 years old so that you carefully compare and make an ideal choice based on the needs of your child.

The deck is not only comfortable to stand on, it is made of sturdy maple wood, the material of choice all through the industry.
This wood is dry and strong. It grows in the cold and so it expands and contracts well in different weather conditions. It will give enough flex as your child bounces on and off the skateboard without cracking or breaking in half.
The graffiti-style graphics doesn’t only look good, it is placed by a waterproof thermal method and serve as a protective barrier from moisture. The protective gear included in this package is essential for a beginner. It’s great it all comes in the box so you don’t have to spend extra money on it. Beware, however, that this set of knee pads, elbow pads, and palm protection will fit too snugly on most children over the age of 7. This skateboard is good for commuting, responds quickly on ramps, pools, and other smooth skating surfaces. It is strong and will last long as your child learns how to skate.
This board is 31 inches and this board can actually take a maximum weight of 300 pounds. So you can actually ride this as an adult as well which is fantastic. Now I would say the ideal weight for the board is probably around 200 to 250 pounds. But lighter can ride this board well. I really like its grippy top. This is very important it helps in stability and keeps control on your board which is great. My kids love his design. What I really don’t like is its wheels they don’t spin freely, but after riding for some time they work fine.

It will be instrumental in maintenance too.

This skateboard is made from eco-friendly pressure-resistant materials. The tail plate has a 30-degree tilt, making it ideal for stunting. It is an excellent skateboard to take on the go. It can carry up to 200lbs and is big enough to balance a child even on rough surfaces.
My Review After Testing
I was riding this board for approximately 2 to 3 hours and this skateboard is blown my expectations. This thing is phenomenally better and way smoother than I honestly thought it was actually gonna be. The wheels are really good and the trucks make it really carvable. So I am able to actually go back and forth really smoothly and I don’t feel like I’m going to off-balance. I don’t feel I am going to lose speed. For me best indication of a good skateboard is whether or not you can actually keep your speed and feel comfortable carving because at the end of the day that’s how you’re going to be able to turn better and just feel more comfortable riding as a rider. The only downside of this skateboard is getting dirty very quickly.

Whether you’re getting on a skateboard for the first time, have tried it a few times, or are a full-blown professional, they have skateboards and accessories for you. This brand also tries to keep its products affordable to cover a wide customer base. They have different beginner skateboards but this one stands out for it’s strength.
Most skateboard companies use 7-ply wood to make their decks because that is the industry standard. Not many companies bother going further than 7 plies, but not ToyerBee. More plies mean more strength and this skateboard is made from 9 layers of strong maple wood. We have reviewed different 7-ply skateboards in this guide and we mean it when we said they are strong. Imagine how strong this skateboard is at 9 plies. Even when you get to a more professional level of skating, you will have this skateboard in your arsenal to do flips and tricks because it is super resilient and will not break easily.
This skateboard is fitted with high-quality park and street wheels. This type of wheel is hard and fast. It makes rolling on your skateboard smoother. Because the wheels are lightweight, they also contribute to reducing the weight of the skateboard. You will enjoy a stable surf-like ride on this skateboard as the riser pads will work abruptly to dampen shock from rough landings.
We love that this package comes with a free repair kit. Not many skateboard companies provide support beyond the basics but ToyerBee has. The kit includes 2 wheel screws, 2 truck screws, and 1 multipurpose wrench. If you have minor issues with your skateboard, you don’t have to take it to a repair shop and spend money getting it fixed.
You can handle some problems at home with this handy repair kit. You can also use this kit to adjust and customize your skateboard before riding. Another thing we loved about this skateboard is the design. It looks really good and clean and we’re sure your kid will love it.
Apart from the good looks, the paint also provides anti-skid and waterproof properties to protect your board and increase safety. This is possible because of the 3 layers of paint and high-quality emery paper used in the design.

Skitch skateboards is an upcoming company that has focused on manufacturing high-quality skateboards out of the United States.
Not many professionals recommend penny boards for beginners but Skitch has found a way to make them suitable for all levels of riders. For beginners, the speed can be reduced on this skateboard to make it safer for them to ride. Balancing on such a small board might take some getting used to but adjustments can be made to accommodate different skill levels and weights for riders.
Made from a tough adaptive plastic material, this penny board is very lightweight and still maintains the strength a beginner can rely on. It may look small, but this skateboard is mighty indeed. The tough retro-style trucks are sturdy and able to bear weights while being flexible enough for turning and carving. Your child can ride this skateboard from beginner to pro-level and make the necessary adjustments for each level as they advance. This will save you the cost of buying a new skateboard for every new level they reach.
The beautiful flashy design is another reason why we know kids will love this skateboard set. Available in electrifying blue and a stunning purple color, a boy or girl will love the design of this penny board and be proud to ride it in the park with friends. The flashing wheels add to the allure of riding this and we are sure your kid will love it.
Not every child in the same age range is the same size. If your child is on the smaller side, you don’t want to burden him or her with a larger wooden skateboard that will be hard work to carry around and oversized for them to start riding with. This is where penny boards come in for beginners.
If your child is going to start skateboarding on a penny board this small, we advise that they learn balancing on a scooter first. Longer penny boards offer more balance but this 22” deck will be quite difficult for someone who has never practiced before.
Although smaller children might not notice this difference, we still recommend some practice before they get on this skateboard. While starting with this skateboard will be a learning curve for your 6-year-old, they will learn control quickly and grow into the skateboard as they grow older.
Although more expensive than regular skateboards, this penny board is significantly cheaper than other products in the same category. You are going to enjoy every dollar spent on this complete skateboard because it does last forever. The packaging is awesome and customer service is top-notch. Skitch skateboards pay a lot of attention to each customer’s needs as they are interested in feedback to better improve future products.
- Made from adaptive flexible plastic.
- 6” x 22” deck.
- Retro pivot trucks.
- Fully adjustable speed settings.

Krown is a skateboard company that caters to riders on a budget. Since they came on the scene back in 1996, the company has kept to its standard of providing quality skateboards for less money. Back when they started, professional skateboards could cost up to $200 while the weaker retail boards could be purchased for $20. Skateboarders had to settle for cheap skateboards with plastic wheels or spend a lot of money for the real deal. Krown came and filled a huge gap in the market by making products available to bridge the gap.
For more than 20 years, this skateboard company has been doing a great job and now many other brands have joined in too. We trust this pro skateboard from Krown because we trust their experience and expertise in putting together strong and lasting skateboards for professionals.
Now you might be wondering why we have listed a professional skateboard for beginners or children. This goes against the status quo but after testing this product, we are sure it has a place on this list. Not every 6-year-old beginner is completely clueless when they get on a skateboard. A lot of them have tried their hands on roller skates and scooters.
That little experience qualifies them to forge ahead with a pro-level skateboard when they are ready to try their hands on skateboarding.
This 8” x 32”m skateboard is a little longer than usual but is stronger and sturdier. It has a medium concave which will give a good pop and will also be nice when learning tricks and flips. This model also fits bigger 6-year-old children who can handle the bigger size and a little added weight than usual.
The small 52mm wheels with a 99A durometer on this skateboard are perfect for park and street skating. These wheels will ride smoothly over even surfaces and are not designed for rougher grounds. So many color combinations are made available so that you can make the right pick to fit your child’s preference.

If you are confident in the skills of your 6-year-old, then leap and get them this pro-level skateboard. Not every child starts with kid sizes skateboards and many of them learn fast. If you have an athletic boy or girl, you already know they will advance quickly and don’t need to be tied down by a kiddies board.
With more than 15 different designs available to choose from, we’re sure you can find a befitting design for your child’s taste here. You will have to buy your protection gear and skate tool because these are not included in the package. You may also have to replace the grip tape on the deck because it is not so strong and will not last as long as the deck itself. Apart from this, the skateboard rides very smoothly and can pick up speed very fast.
- Made from 7-ply maple wood.
- 8” x 32” deck.
- Double kicktail.

What You Should Consider Before Buying A Skateboard For Your Child?
Buying a skateboard can be challenging, especially if you have no idea where to start and what to look out for. Thankfully, we have a quick list of things for you to read through, so you know what you’re doing and make the right skateboard choice for your child.
All 6 years old’s aren’t the same size, so choose a skateboard size that will match the height and weight of your child. Bearing in mind kids can grow very fast, don’t opt for a perfect or mini size.
Leave room for future growth, or you might have to replace their skateboard before you know it. If you choose an extremely large size, your child will feel uncomfortable and unbalanced.
- Physical features
A skateboard has many parts, including the deck, truck, wheels, bearing, and more. The makeup of these things determines how good a skateboard is. Some skateboards come with safety gear, so you don’t have to search for and purchase this necessary equipment separately.
While buying a skateboard, consider which parts are more important to you and what characteristics you need them to have.
- Check for quality
You want a high-quality skateboard to ensure your child’s safety, but not every option in the market is the best quality. By considering the manufacturing materials, you can decide the quality of the product. You can also check customer reviews to learn about real-life experiences other buyers have had. A few bad reviews aren’t enough to ward you off, but avid buying a skateboard if there are too many negative reports.
Make sure you don’t go to a skateboard store if you haven’t determined your budget. There are many options for different prices, so you are sure to find a good fit. You don’t have to splurge on a skateboard if you’re not sure your child will be enthusiastic enough about the sport to use it often. If you’re ready to invest in the highest quality for a child that is serious with skateboarding, bear in mind that excellent quality skateboards will cost more than others.
- Look for kids’ interest
You will pull out the cash to buy the skateboard, but you won’t own it or ride it. You don’t have to listen to everything that your kid wants in skateboard, but consider buying something they would love and enjoy riding. If your child doesn’t like the skateboard, it could sit pretty collecting dust, and you would have wasted good money.
How To Teach Your Child To Skateboard?
Skateboarding, like many sports, is best picked up as a child. Children are more agile and ready to learn than adults or even teenagers. They shouldn’t learn how to skateboard just because it sounds logical, and skateboarding has rich benefits for kids.
Skateboarding will teach your kids toughness, coordination, and determination. If you’re ready to start training your little one on skating, you can use the steps and tips discussed here.
- Start practicing on carpet or grass. This will restrict the skateboard’s movements, so your kid isn’t startled when it moves too fast.
- Move on to smooth surfaces when the child is comfortable enough to move on the skateboard. Rougher surfaces can cause more severe injuries if they fall.
- Teach them to place their feet close to the bolts when standing on the skateboard. Encourage them to practice getting on and off the board.
- Teach them to flex their heels and toes to lean backward and forward, respectively. They should slightly bend their knees for this part.
- Hold their hand and ride them around, making sure to note their dominant foot.
- Encourage your kid to keep going, don’t compare them with other children who are learning faster.
How to Ensure Your Child’s Safety While Skateboarding?
Skateboarding is one of the most exciting and accessible physical activities for kids. There’s nothing more thrilling than barreling down the street on a skateboard. But there can be a downside. If a child does not follow the best safety practices while skateboarding, they could injure themselves. So how can you ensure your child’s safety while skateboarding? There are several steps you can take, like requiring your child to wear protective gear or to skateboard at a safe venue.
One basic step parents can take is not allowing a child below 5 years of age to skateboard. They need to be at least 6 years old or more to be able to maneuver a skateboard safely. And for children from 6 years to 10-year-old, skateboarding can be allowed but must always be done under the supervision of an adult.
Let’s look at some common safeguarding best practices for children while they skateboard:
Gear for Safe Skateboarding
The most important gear for safe skateboarding is the skateboard itself. Kids must have the right skateboard that suits their activity, style, and size. There are skateboards designed for speed, freestyle, or slalom skateboarding, so choose accordingly. Other important gear includes:
- Glasses and goggles that are shatterproof so that their eyes always remain protected, even when they take a tumble.
- Closed-toe shoes with grippy soles will minimize the number of falls your children take and reduce the chances of injury.
- Elbow pads and knee pads are incredibly important as these parts are the most prone to scrapes and bruises.
- The same goes for wrist guards, these will protect the still-growing wrists of a small child and prevent potential sprains.
- And finally, a helmet. Protecting a child’s head should be a no-brainer! Make sure to pick a helmet made specifically for skateboarding. That said, multi-sport helmets work well too. This is crucial, your child should not be skateboarding without a helmet under any circumstances.
Choosing a Safe Venue to Skateboard
Now that you have the right gear for your kid, it’s time to find the right spot. As an adult, your responsibility will be to inspect the surface your child will be riding on before they begin. Surfaces that have cracks on them or contain debris like sticks or other garbage are a strict NO. There are also a host of other safety rules, including:
- Children under no circumstance should wear headphones while skateboarding. This will impede their ability to hear sounds of vehicles approaching or other sounds that are critical for outdoor safety.
- You should always discourage children from hitching rides behind a bus, truck, car, bicycle, or any other vehicle.
- One skateboard should have only one kid and no more.
- Avoid skateboarding in areas that are crowded.
- Follow all the recommended steps and recommendations at a skate park and make sure your children understand them too.
- Never let children ride outdoors when it’s raining or if the streets are wet. This reduces friction and makes them accident-prone.
Skating is fun, and it is a type of physical activity every kid will enjoy. Kids can ride to a skate park, school, or cruise with their friends around the neighborhood. In the beginning, it is fun, and a wonderful skateboard adds to the fun element. Once you are out there to purchase a skateboard, make the perfect choice by going through all that is listed above.
One more suggestion is that, don’t be too meticulous, you cannot have an ideal product without paying the money that it deserves. Your goal should be to provide a wonderful experience to your kid while skating, and if they are glad, you have just won the battle, and it is the biggest indicator of the right decision.
Know about the basics of how different parts of the skateboard works and also teach your kid to maintain it properly because purchasing a good product is not a big deal. Maintaining them is one of the challenges. The more carefully, it is treated more durable it becomes.
To encourage a child who is very enthusiastic about skateboarding, you can purchase a skateboard of your own and ride along with your kid once in a while. This act will go beyond mere encouragement and give you quality time to make fun memories and bond with your child. Skateboarding is all-around fun, why not have some fun with your child?
